Tips for Using your W.T. Kirkman Lantern
Recommended Lamp Oil
We recommend using Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil or Firefly Paraffin Lamp Oil because both are designed to burn very cleanly producing virtually no soot, smoke or odor. If you choose another brand, please select a high-quality pure liquid paraffin oil. You want a combustible fuel, NOT a FLAMMABLE fuel. NEVER USE ACETONE, ALCOHOL, GASOLINE, ETHYLALCOHOL or PAINT THINNER . Sorry for shouting but it’s important 🙂
Never Mix Fuels as mixing will change the burning characteristics.
Filling the Lantern
Included with the lantern is a black funnel housed in the glass globe. Please remove and use this to fill the lantern. Do not fill lantern resevoir more than 85% full, unless maximum burning time is required. Overfilling the lantern may cause the fuel to spill out of the burner socket onto the inner air chamber plate and leak out the side tube joint, which creates the impression the lantern is leaking.
Lighting the Lantern
Push down on lever on the right side of the lantern to raise the globe, exposing the wick. Light the wick while the globe is raised. Position lever back to the original position, lowering the globe. After the wick is lit, it should be adjusted to no more than 1/16” above the flame plate. As the lantern warms to operating temperature, the flame will increase in size. Five minutes after lighting, the flame may be adjusted to provide maximum illumination. If the wick is set too high, smoking will occur, which means soot will be deposited on the globe.
Trimming the Wick
The lanterns are shipped from the factory with wicks properly trimmed. With steady use, the wick will need trimming occasionally. Trim off charred tip with sharp scissors so that the top of the wick is flat and square, making right angles at the corners.
Changing the Chimney
Grasp the loop at the top of the lantern and lift. This will release the globe. Tilt the globe away from the filler cap at the bottom to a horizontal position and take out the chimney.
Keep away from small children – This is not a toy.
